Resources for Farmed Animal Advocacy: 2024 Roundup
By Hive, SofiaBalderson, Kevin Xia šø @ 2025-01-21T21:51 (+7)
Tl;dr - This is a curated and useful list of farmed animal advocacy resources that came out in 2024. We sent this compilation out in our free bi-weekly newsletter Hive Highlights.
The farmed animal advocacy movement made some significant strides forward, but challenges remain in the fight against factory farming. So, to prepare ourselves and fellow advocates for whatever 2025 brings, we put together the top resources and updates from the 2024 Hive Highlights newsletter editions. If you missed last yearās version, hereās our 2023 Resource Roundup. š
2024 was a big year for us at Hive: it was the first full calendar year of working on the org full-time. We rebranded and continued to scale our Slack space. Here are 15 lessons weāve learned and there are more Hive updates below. š§”
Enjoy and here is to more meaningful change for the animals in 2025!š
Themes
š¤ Finding more funding
In our movement, one thing remains constant for organizations no matter the region or focus areaāalmost everyone needs fundingāmore of it and from a more diverse portfolio.
The movement is facing a critical moment. With many groups reliant on a few large funders, any strategic shift or change of heart can leave them with significant budget gaps. It's harder for leaders to focus on growth and scaling impact when they are constantly chasing funding.
Lack of funding was identified as the greatest challenge in Faunalyticsā An International Study of Advocatesā Strategies & Needsācited as an obstacle by 95% of respondents. This significant need was confirmed in the Animal Advocacy Strategy Forum survey results.
Luckily, weāve seen an increase in resources to help organizations improve their fundraising capacity so that they can fulfill their mission more effectively and efficiently. Some 2024 resources include fundraising research (like this and this), online courses, conference sessions, and Hiveās Fundraising Database.
Weāve also seen a lot of interest in finding funding sources outside the movement. Adjacent sectors, in particular climate and effective altruism/effective giving, have been intentional targets in 2024. While animal welfare giving is still a small portion of donations in those spaces (5.5% of effective giving in 2023), animal welfare has risen as a priority among the Effective Altruism (EA) community each year since 2015. Factory farming has also been recognized by 80,000 Hours as one of the āmost pressing world problems". Adding to these the results of the 2024 EA Forum Donation Election, and public EA Forum conversations, weāre hopeful that momentum for the animal welfare cause will continue.
Hereās a long list of fundraising resources from this past year. š

š Global capacity building
Weāre excited to see greater recognition of global farmed animal advocacy efforts, the people doing the hard work, and region-specific needs. This has been seen through an increase in resources and opportunities specifically to help those in neglected regions.
Africa: Animal Advocacy Africa and Thrive Africa are two major capacity builders that provide training and grants. Supporting organizations have produced valuable research about the funding landscape, strategy roadmap, and country-specific reports.
Asia/APAC: Welfare Matters and Asia for Animals are two large regional capacity builders, among many country-specific groups. Other organizations have produced valuable research about the funding landscape, consumer research on plant-based foods in Southeast Asia and China, the usage of research and data by advocates in these regions, and more. We had the pleasure of attending Asia Farm Animal Day, and network with, learn from, and support advocates in Asia ourselves!
Latin America: Throughout 2024, we have seen various conferences in Latin America, including the AVA Summit + Vegfest, which we were privileged to attend ourselves. We have seen research honing in on countries in Latin America, such as this report on promising opportunities in Brazil, and we ourselves have hosted an intro event and translated our onboarding materials to support advocates in these regions.
Existing support for advocates in neglected regions is not enoughāfor example, as mentioned above, funding is a challengeābut weāre glad to see an increased focus on these regions. Animal & Vegan Advocacy (AVA) 2025 conferences are coming to Nairobi, India, and Latin America. Animal Charity Evaluators (ACE) awarded more than half of their 2024 Movement Grants to groups and individuals in Asia, Latin America, Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
