About this Funding Opportunity
We are a group of donors looking to support cost-effective and high-impact global health nonprofits during a critical growth phase where targeted funding can have immense impact. For more information, including how to join as a funder, see the bottom of this post.
We will consider applications with total funding requests ranging from approximately $50,000-$300,000.
Grants will initially be one-off support, though renewals may be possible in some cases, at the discretion of individual donors. In this round, we expect around 2 million USD will be available for funding across all grants - though this depends on funder-applicant fit.
Grantees from our inaugural round are listed on our website. Approximately 10% of applicants were ultimately supported.
Eligibility criteria:
- Intervention is focused on improving health-related outcomes across any health area (including but not limited to: Infectious Disease; Child and Maternal Health; Family Planning; Nutrition; Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene; Mental Health; Non-communicable Diseases).
- The intervention can be service delivery, health systems strengthening, policy work, or any other intervention type that delivers measurable impact in improving health outcomes.
- You are a registered not-for-profit entity, or are partnering with one as a fiscal agent.
- Implementing in a low or middle income country, as categorized by the World Bank.
- Age: We will focus on organizations that have been operating for at least one year and no more than ten years.
- Organization revenue: We will prioritize organizations with an annual operating budget between $100,000 and $3 million.
- Funding history: Some, but not all, circle members may give preference to organizations that have previously received funding or a positive evaluation from evidence- and cost-effectiveness-oriented funders.
Selection criteria - What makes a competitive application?
Competitive applications will have the following qualities:
- A great idea: The applicant is proposing an innovative program where funding can catalyze progress.
- Cost effectiveness: We are looking to support interventions that are significantly more cost effective than cash transfers.
- Demonstrated funding gap: We want to enable work which wouldn't otherwise happen.
- Indications of impact: The applicant can demonstrate results through metrics, internal data, or models backed by external data. Especially strong applicants state a “north star” metric by which they want to be held accountable in ~5 years.
- Scalability: The applicant has concrete expansion plans to scale and a definition of what scaled service delivery looks like.
- Continuity/sustainability plan: The applicant explains clearly how they will build on this grant and who the payer at scale or next funder target types will be.
- Quality of evidence: What studies, data or information exists to indicate that the program is or will be successful?
- Team Strength/Fit: Team leaders have a strong track record and understanding of relevant field/intervention.

About the Global Health Funding Circle
We are a group of donors who support promising global health nonprofits during the critical "valley of death" growth phase where targeted funding can have immense impact. By coordinating funding during this inflection point, we help elevate the next generation of global health innovators.
There are many programs helping early-stage ventures start up. And later on, a select few highly-effective nonprofits attract substantial attention from major funders. But between these stages lies a gap - a time when organizations lack the track record to attract major donations, yet have demonstrated initial success and have the capacity and willingness to scale. We seek to bridge this gap by identifying and propelling organizations poised to maximize impact for underserved populations.
If you are a funder who donates over $100,000 a year to global health charities, you can express interest in joining the Global Health Funding Circle here. We also offer a service where we forward post-round recommendations with room for more funding to major donors who can not join the Global Health Funding Circle.
