But individual researchers can't solve coordination problems at scale. This is where institutional hubs matter.

Academic economics suffers from what I call "hardness bias" prestigious journals reward tractable, quantifiable work over speculative but crucial conceptual frameworks. Result? Network science gives us the strategic map. Small-world dynamics show us how threats propagate. Scale-free structure shows us where to intervene. And the empirical reality of emerging technologies particularly AI tells us when that intervention must happen.

Most moral philosophy asks: what should I do given my circumstances? Longtermism asks: what should I do given that my circumstances represent the highest-leverage moment in the history of consciousness?

The answer is obvious. Identify the hubs. Influence them. And recognize that preventing AI misalignment isn't one priority among many—it's the Achilles' heel of the entire network, the single point of failure that could determine whether the next billion years are worth living.

That’s a powerful breakdown, I think you’re spot on that AI alignment is the real hinge issue because of its irreversible downstream effects.
