That's why the upcoming round of the Charity Entrepreneurship Incubation Program is (for the first time in our 50-org track record) for animals only.

A fully cost-covered 8-week program from February 1, 2027. You get a co-founder, a frontier problem to work on, training from people who have built field-leading charities, and a seed grant to launch. Mostly online, with 2 weeks in London and San Francisco, travel covered and stipends from $5,000 a month. Then, a funded 3-month exploration phase to land on your solution before you pitch for funding. Apply from anywhere in the world. 

Founders won't be handed a narrowly specified idea. You’ll be presented with frontier problems: problem spaces where funders and industry want a fix but nobody has built one. Our research team is currently reviewing 100+ candidate problems, spanning welfare tech, breeding, research infrastructure, talent, and finding the next neglected population the size of farmed shrimp. • A year ago, family planning was a new area for GiveWell—since then, we've made around $20 million in grants to family planning programs across commodity procurement, supply chain support, and service delivery.

• Diarrhea kills more than 400,000 children under five every year. GiveWell recently made a grant to support WASHmobile in Eastern DRC and South Sudan—a water, sanitation, and hygiene program that aims to reach households at heightened risk of diarrheal disease.

Wild Animal Initiative has selected 13 new research projects to receive a total of $727,658 in grants, adding to the body of ongoing and completed scientific research we have funded.

Our Grants Program funds academic research on high-priority questions in wild animal welfare science. This year, after receiving 400 expressions of interest, we selected grantees based on how well their projects meet our selection criteria and address priority topics in the field of wild animal welfare science.

New report: Wild Animal Welfare Donation Opportunities & Room for More Funding

We coordinated a collective room-for-more-funding estimate across five organizations with dedicated WAW workstreams: Animal Ethics, the Center for Wild Animal Welfare, the NYU Wild Animal Welfare Program, Wild Animal Initiative, and our own Animal Welfare Department.

Each organization estimated what it could do with additional funding in 2027, both to bolster current strategies and to pursue more ambitious ones. The combined estimate: $3.16M–$8.23M in additional funding for 2027.

Bringing public and private investors together

One of the biggest bottlenecks for alternative proteins is scale-up funding, particularly early-stage public funding that will de-risk the sector and give private investors the confidence to follow. Drawing on GFI Europe's view of the whole ecosystem, we partnered with Invest-NL, a Dutch finance institution, to bring more than 40 investors together and work out how public and private money can better complement each other. We've distilled that into a set of practical recommendations for funders, designed to channel more investment into the space and enable the scale we need to feed a growing population without intensive animal agriculture.
 

US military looks to alternative proteins

In June, the US Army put out a call for proposals to produce alternative proteins in the field using precision fermentation, in part thanks to several years of GFI engagement, during which we highlighted the food security and health benefits of alternative proteins. Due to the large quantities often required by public institutions, swapping even a portion of conventional meat with alternative proteins could spare a significant number of animals and reduce emissions. It's a sign of how far the sector has come that alternative proteins are part of this conversation. This is also part of a broader effort by GFI worldwide to highlight the role public institutions can play in supporting alternative proteins, including through school meals and other public food programmes.

Translational research in India

GFI India and India’s Central Food Technological Research Institute - one of India’s leading food-technology institutes - co-hosted a symposium bringing together researchers, students, and industry leaders to strengthen India’s smart-protein field. A central theme was the need for more translational research: training and collaborative R&D designed around real-world industry needs. 

India has world-class scientific talent and the potential to become a global centre for alternative-protein research and manufacturing. Reaching that potential will require stronger connections between universities and companies, so that promising science moves from the laboratory into products and production systems. GFI India’s fellowship and partnership with CSIR-CFTRI are helping build that bridge, and the skilled workforce the sector will need to scale.
 

How protein diversification can help our food system survive climate change

Europe has already experienced two record-breaking heatwaves this summer. Our food system is suffering as a result, but it’s also a key driver of climate change. We’ve published a blog explaining how climate change is impacting food production and the role protein diversification can play in making the food system more resilient, both by reducing the emissions responsible for climate change and adapting to the extremes we’re already experiencing. Fish Welfare Initiative Updates

• Farm program RCT results: We recently completed a randomized controlled trial with 53 farms to understand to what extent our farm program, the Alliance for Responsible Aquaculture, is actually improving water quality on fish farms. The primary result is that our program appears to be having a strong positive effect.
• "Chill kill" project update: We posted an update on our chill kill project, which aims to develop a less inhumane way of slaughtering fishes.
• Pause of our policy work in India: We recently made the hard decision to pause our policy work in India. This is primarily to allow us to better focus on our farm work.

Animal Factory, Factory Farm, Or Something Else? Testing The Language Of Advocacy

Our study surveyed 2,000 U.S. adults to compare reactions to “factory farm,” “animal factory,” and “industrial animal agriculture.” The term “animal factory” produced significantly more negative impressions (79%) than the other two, with strong associations to confinement, slaughter, cruelty, and unsanitary conditions. For advocacy organizations, marketers, and policy professionals working on food system change, this data offers a tested starting point for messaging decisions.

Almost Eight Billion Per Year, And Counting: Global Chick Culling

Within hours of hatching, roughly half the chicks born into the global egg industry are killed simply because they’re male. Almost Eight Billion Per Year, And Counting builds a transparent, country-by-country model from UN data across 176 countries and finds that nearly eight billion male chicks were culled in 2024 — up about 11% since 2019, with roughly 70% of the total concentrated in Asia. The report also maps the path forward: in-ovo sexing technology has reached commercial maturity and now covers about 40% of E.U. laying hens, legislative bans are spreading, and consumer opposition is overwhelming once people learn the practice exists.
