Announcing new org: 90,000 Hours (April Fools' post)

We know that people in the effective altruist community love listening to long podcasts. But why stop at 2.5 hours? The most impactful EA podcasts tend to be longer rather than shorter. This is why we are starting a new organization: 90,000 Hours.

Our goal is to create 90,000 hours worth of listening material, mainly focused around how to do have a positive impact with your career. While the length of individual podcast episodes will vary, our theory of change suggests that we should aim for an average podcast length of 8-10 hours. This will enable us to provide enough listening material for an entire work career (assuming working 40 hours per week, 52 weeks a year, for approximately 42 years).

Those who listen on 1.5 or 1.75 speed can have even more impact, consuming the entire library of audio material prior to reaching retirement age. This will enable them to absorb material sooner, and take impactful action counterfactually earlier.

If a podcast will make you 9x more effective, then theoretically you should spend up to 80000 hours out of 90000 hours of your career searching for that multiplier.

80/20 rule.  Spend 18K hours to get 64K hours of impact ;)
