The Humane League (THL)
In April, 12 companies reported on their cage-free commitments to spare 32 million hens from suffering. Based on the progress these companies made, THL estimates they spared 1 million hens from cages in 2024.
THL UK pressured companies to spare chickens raised for meat from some of the worst practices on factory farms. UK supermarket Waitrose announced it would be fully compliant with the Better Chicken Commitment for its own brand products by August 2025, sparing a total of 37,396,810 chickens from immense suffering. In addition, Domino’s UK & Ireland has agreed to adopt the Better Chicken Commitment, which will spare 1.5 million chickens from suffering once implemented.
80,000 Hours
80,000 Hours published a problem profile on AI-enabled power grabs and a reading list for understanding AI and its risks.
They also published two other blog posts on how to use LLMs more effectively and the case for why you should consider quitting your job and working on AI.
On the 80,000 Hours Podcast, Rob interviewed:
- Rose Chan Loui on OpenAI’s reversal of its plans to sideline its nonprofit foundation
- Ian Dunt on why governments in Britain and elsewhere can’t get anything done – and how to fix it

They also released bonus episodes on career advice and mental health from 16 previous guests.
ALLFED
ALLFED focuses on building resilience to global food system failure. Its 2024 Annual Report provides more details about its work on developing practical, cost-effective solutions so that, even in a catastrophe, governments, industry, and communities can respond rapidly to keep people fed and sustain global cooperation.
However, ALLFED now faces a major funding gap: without new funding, the organization will have to significantly scale down its programmes, including its research output, and the ability to support governments in preparing for global food system shocks. It urgently needs to raise $800,000 in grants and gifts to sustain its impact.
AI-driven risks will also heighten other catastrophic threats, such as severe pandemics or nuclear war, both of which could severely disrupt global food security. Therefore, resilience planning is critical. Find out more about ALLFED’s appeal and give here.
Anima International
For the second time, Anima International organized the Central Asian Animal Advocacy Forum in Kazakhstan. 130 participants attended the conference, and the programme included workshops and talks on the legal status of animals, building effective organizations, and successful region-specific animal advocacy strategies and initiatives. The conference remains the only event of this kind in Central Asia, contributing to the development of the animal advocacy movement in the region.
In France, the organization published a cage-free accountability report to track wholesalers and retailers’ progress on fulfilling their promises to switch to cage-free egg supplies. This is part of their continued mission to improve living conditions for millions of egg-laying hens across France by ending the use of cages.
Center for AI Safety
The Center for AI Safety has launched AI Frontiers, a platform dedicated to expert dialogue on AI’s most pressing questions. If you have something to say and would like to publish on AI Frontiers, submit a draft or pitch. Subscribe to receive expert articles directly in your inbox.
Centre for Effective Altruism
EA Funds and CEA announced they are merging on 1 July.
EA Funds’ Grantmaking Pause: EA Funds will not be processing new grant recommendations between June 1st and July 31st due to operational changes during the merger with CEA. Applications submitted after May 9th won't be processed until August. Time-sensitive requests should clearly indicate preferred decision dates with rationale in applications.
Also because of this operational transition, CEA grants will not be paid out from June 1st to July 31st; apply by May 23rd to receive Group Support Funding before the pause.
Faunalytics
Faunalytics’ latest qualitative study, Effective Communication With Political Staffers: A Framework For Animal Advocates, sheds light on the communication strategies and best practices that help animal advocates effectively engage with legislators and their staff. The report dives into the specific tactics needed to influence policy in the animal protection space, with insights from those working inside the legislative process.
Faunalytics is conducting its annual Community Survey. The survey is used to evaluate the impact of Faunalytics’ research and learn how to improve the resources it provides. The survey should only take 5 minutes to complete, and participants have the option of entering to win a $50 gift card or animal charity donation.
The organization has also updated its Global Animal Slaughter Statistics & Charts. This in-depth resource explores global estimates of the number of animals slaughtered for food each year, using data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This update includes a companion blog exploring the second most slaughtered land animal on the planet, ducks.
The Good Food Institute (GFI)
GFI published a new alternative proteins public investment database, which provides information on past and current public investments in science and commercialization by governments around the world — including NASA’s 1999 investment in cultivated meat and the US Department of Agriculture’s 2005 investment in plant-based meat.
GFI lead scientist Priera Panescu Scott co-edited a special issue of the journal Current Research in Food Science, which focused on cutting-edge developments in alternative protein science. Read the editorial overview written by Priera and Professor Alejandro Marangoni for a summary of key topics and insights.
GFI Brazil organized a forum for Brazilian scientists, government researchers, and industry representatives, many from leading federal universities, focused on the soy supply chain. The forum aimed to identify technological solutions to improve the quality of soy-based ingredients, and the insights gathered will drive targeted research to address key hurdles and support the development of improved plant-based meat products.
The Alt Protein Project (APP, GFI’s global college chapter program) held its first Regional Student Symposium during the co-located Plant Based Tech and New Meat Brazil events in São Paulo. Twenty-five students from APP groups across Latin America connected and collaborated as future professionals in the alternative protein sector. GFI Brazil also hosted a dedicated APP session at New Meat Brazil, which featured a presentation of student group achievements and an industry–academia roundtable on bridging science and innovation.
GFI APAC Senior SciTech Analyst Dean Powell delivered a presentation on cell culture media at a critical Codex Alimentarius (“food code”) session in Seoul for food safety and global trade. He was also a panelist on cultivated meat regulation alongside representatives from the Singapore Food Agency, the FAO, the WHO, and the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment.
