The Animal Welfare team has released a database of sources investigating interventions to reduce meat and animal product consumption â€” a useful compilation for anyone working in this context.

For more publications on animal welfare, subscribe to the RP Strategic Animal Insights Substack.

New Research Resource: A database of 413 studies examining interventions to reduce meat and animal product consumption

Research on this topic is currently scattered across environmental science, medicine, and animal advocacy literature, making it challenging for researchers and advocates to assess the full evidence base.
This database aims to help address this gap by providing:

We hope this resource will be useful for those working in sustainability, public health, or behavioral change research and interventions who need access to existing evidence on intervention effectiveness.

Marcus A. Davis, Rethink Priorities CEO, has launched a â€śCharity For All” Substack dedicated to evidence-based world improvement. Marcus has released his first posts on altruistic principles, his personal connection to the lead exposure work, and flaws of steelmanning arguments. You can support his efforts by subscribing to the Substack, restacking the content, and following him on LinkedIn and sharing content with your networks there.

80,000 Hours

80,000 Hours made significant updates to their list of the world’s most pressing problems.

80,000 Hours published a problem profile on catastrophic AI misuse, an article on how not to lose your job to AI, and a list of technical AI safety upskilling resources.

On the 80,000 Hours Podcast, Rob interviewed Toby Ord on graphs AI companies would prefer you didn’t (fully) understand and Hugh White on why Trump is abandoning US hegemony – and why that’s probably good.

Anima International

Anima International is coordinating actions across Europe as part of a global campaign against the Best Western hotel chain led by the Open Wing Alliance.

Six years ago, Best Western made a public commitment to be 100% cage-free globally by 2025, affecting over 300,000 hens every year. While progress has been made in some local branches, the chain has failed to report its progress globally.

As a result of retailer commitments, Avara Foods – one of the UK’s largest chicken producers – has now transitioned all of its broiler chicken farms to the reduced stocking density of the European Chicken Commitment. Its competitor 2 Sisters has also recently announced that it will do the same by 2027. These welfare improvements have come as a result of many years of campaigning from a number of UK animal welfare organizations.

France has seen the first-ever fulfillment of a cage-free commitment by a wholesaler. While this is a very small wholesaler, with the sector as a whole lagging behind, this win marks a symbolic victory for caged hens in France.

Evidence Action

Evidence Action published a piece explaining why they’re reducing chlorine dispensers in Kenya.

Evidence Action also shared a progress update on their safe water work in India. The article includes first-hand accounts of families gardening, saving money, and staying healthy. They also explain how they design chlorination devices the Evidence Action way—adaptable, safe, cost-effective, and easy to maintain.

Faunalytics

A new study from Faunalytics and The Good Growth Co. examines the landscape of social movements in six Southeast Asian countries to identify opportunities for collaboration between farmed animal advocates and other sectors. The research focuses on the environmental and health/development movements, analyzing how these groups operate, where their goals align with animal advocacy, and how coalitions form and function in the region.

Faunalytics presented their 2025 Community Survey results with both quantitative and qualitative feedback about the use and value of their research, along with details on how advocates’ ideas are being incorporated into their work. Highlights include: 98% of respondents agreed that Faunalytics’ work is high quality, 97% said they would probably or definitely recommend Faunalytics to others, and 70% said that Faunalytics’ work has helped them or their organization reduce suffering and save animal lives.

The organization also added two new entries to their Tactics in Practice series: The Science of Vegan Challenges and The Science of Protests and Demonstrations.

Fish Welfare Initiative

Fish Welfare Initiative posted an update on their project to develop pre-slaughter stunning in India. They also announced a new study to identify promising interventions for helping farmed fishes in earlier life stages.

They recently published a blog post summarizing insights from their first lookbacks on grants to New Incentives and Helen Keller Intl.

In a recent podcast episode, GiveWell Principal Researcher Alex Cohen joins CEO and co-founder Elie Hassenfeld to discuss the forecasting work GiveWell has undertaken to better understand what the future of global health funding might look like. They explore the potential size of the funding gaps, which programs might be affected, and how GiveWell is preparing to respond in a new era for global health philanthropy.

The Good Food Institute

GFI Brazil and the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation launched a three-part alternative protein workshop series for scientists across the country. GFI Brazil Policy Analyst Gabriela Garcia hosted the first event focused on cultivated meat, which was broadcast on the Ministry’s YouTube channel.

GFI Europe had a strong presence at this year’s IFFA, the largest meat trade fair in the world, which has fully integrated alternative proteins into its mandate. In addition to hosting a joint booth with ProVeg International and BALPro, GFI Europe Head of Industry Carlotte Lucas delivered a main-stage presentation on plant-based R&D opportunities, led a roundtable discussion on blended meat, and served as an official event guide, leading attendees to alternative protein exhibitors while providing an overview of the sector.

GFI Israel’s Policy team launched The Next Course 2025, an executive leadership program to drive cross-sector collaboration and innovation in the alternative protein field. The program convened a diverse cohort of 14 senior leaders from government, academia, industry, and the public sector, educating a strategic network of alternative protein champions.

GFI APAC presented at a novel foods seminar co-hosted by Mycrocell and the Future Food Lab at Singapore Polytechnic, an institution under Singapore’s Ministry of Education.

The Humane League

On June 17, THL launched the world’s largest investigation into caged egg farms. In partnership with We Animals and Reporters for Animals International, THL released footage from egg farms in 37 countries documenting the extreme cruelty caused by the intensive confinement of egg-laying hens.

Due to pressure generated by the investigation, three global companies reported fulfilling their cage-free commitments, and six more reported progress toward their goals, including The Cheesecake Factory, which fulfilled its global cage-free commitment six years ahead of schedule, sparing 185,000 hens from suffering annually.

In addition, thanks to efforts by Open Wing Alliance member Nevidimi Zhivotni (Invisible Animals in English), who leveraged investigation footage in their country, a Bulgarian egg farm home to more than 46,000 hens was forced to permanently close.
