Open Phil's farm animal welfare team is hiring!

Hi friends,

We’re growing! Open Philanthropy’s farm animal welfare team is accelerating the rate of our grantmaking, and we’re hiring for three new roles to support our growth.

The roles: we’re looking to hire for three more senior and specialized roles:

• A generalist grantmaker: someone with exceptional judgment, analytical skills, and knowledge of the global farm animal movement to expand our grantmaking to new geographies and approaches.
• A scientist: someone with strong scientific expertise — especially the ability to analyze and assess scientific study designs — to expand our grantmaking in alternative protein and farm animal welfare science research.
• A quantitative researcher: someone with exceptional quantitative reasoning skills, and the ability to evaluate social science evidence and build models to expand our assessments of the cost-effectiveness of different strategies to help farm animals.

What we’re looking for: there are no specific educational, work experience, or other requirements for the new roles. Instead, we’re open to all candidates who have the specific expertise outlined above and the following traits:

• A strong interest in reducing the suffering of farm animals, and in Open Philanthropy’s mission of doing as much good as possible per dollar. 
• An interest in pragmatically analyzing the most cost-effective ways to maximize our impact, and a willingness to acknowledge tradeoffs and “follow the numbers.”  
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills. You must be comfortable analyzing tradeoffs, critically evaluating claims, thinking probabilistically, and working with imperfect information.
• Ability to work well with a large degree of autonomy. We are looking for candidates who will be able to quickly grasp the team’s priorities and feel comfortable driving projects forward and making needed judgment calls relatively independently. 
• Good written and oral communication skills, especially the ability to explain your views clearly and with strong reasoning transparency.

• All three roles are relatively senior, with titles of either program associate or senior program associate, and compensation of $107,019.80 to $127,464.93 per year, including an unconditional 401(k) grant. We may offer higher compensation for candidates with exceptional expertise and experience.
• The start date is flexible, though we’d prefer someone to start relatively soon after receiving an offer (likely in late spring or early summer of 2022).
• You can do the job remotely or from our San Francisco office, depending on your preference. We’re happy to consider candidates who would require visa sponsorship or who want to work from outside the US, though you’d need to be able to do some meetings on US time zone hours.
• If you’re worried it might be awkward applying (e.g. because you work at a grantee or we’re friends), please still do. We don’t need to contact your current employer, and it won’t affect your relationship with us.
