Betting on Black Swans: Why Teach Me Well Ghana Could Change Everything

In the world of decision-making, not all choices are created equal. Some paths lead to predictable outcomes, while others have the potential to change lives, many lives on a scale that defies expectations. These rare but powerful events are known as Black Swans, and they’re often found hiding in places shaped by heavy-tailed distributions.

At Teach Me Well Ghana, we’re betting on a Black Swan.

What Are Heavy-Tailed Opportunities?

In statistics, a heavy-tailed distribution is one where rare events—though infrequent—have a disproportionate impact. In philanthropy, this means a few interventions may have massively more impact than others. Most giving does some good, but a few efforts can change the trajectory of entire communities or systems.

Teach Me Well as a Black Swan Bet

We believe foundational learning is one of those few interventions. Children who cannot read or understand numbers by Grade 3 are often locked out of future learning. Yet with targeted support using the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach, we can help them catch up fast.

Here’s why we believe this work holds Black Swan potential:

The problem is deep and widespread: Millions of children in Ghana and across Africa are in school but not learning.

The solution is evidence-based but under-applied: TaRL has shown strong results, but it hasn’t yet reached the scale it deserves.

The cost per child is low, but the long-term gains are high: Foundational skills lead to higher earnings, better health, and lifelong learning.

Learning to Spot and Adapt to Heavy Tails

Most decisions in life follow predictable patterns. But some like choosing your career or your cause deserve extra thought. They are high-variance decisions, and getting them right can make all the difference.

At Teach Me Well Ghana, we are constantly experimenting, iterating, and listening, exploring what works. Like investors who balance risk with reward, we seek small, safe tests that could lead to large, lasting gains.

What This Means for You

If you’re thinking about where to give, volunteer, or partner, consider where your effort could do the most good. Look for those fat-tailed opportunities where a single decision or donation could multiply in impact.

Supporting foundational learning in underserved communities is one of those rare bets.

We’ve taken that leap. And if we’re right, the payoff will be thousands of lives changed not just now, but for generations.
