Anima International
The Supreme Court in Bulgaria has officially banned the breeding and import of American mink in the country.
Meanwhile, in Poland, a fur farming bill is pending proceedings in a special parliamentary commission. The responsible team at Anima International estimates a 30–50% probability that the ban will be passed. The ban would mean the full elimination of around 2–3 million animals per year in Poland. For more information on the cost-effectiveness of working on fur animals, check out this post evaluating the cost-effectiveness of Anima International in Poland.

GiveWell has recommended over $1 billion to malaria programs, averting an estimated 200,000+ deaths—mostly in young children. Now, major anticipated funding reductions threaten to create substantial gaps in life-saving malaria programs. In a recent podcast episode, CEO and co-founder Elie Hassenfeld and researchers Alex Bowles and Rosie Bettle discuss the potential impacts of these funding shortfalls. Learn more about Givewell’s response to the cuts here.

GFI conducted webinars on four flagship annual assessments on the state of alternative proteins.
The Humane League
In July, 7 companies reported on their cage-free commitments to spare 2.4 million hens in their supply chain. Based on these companies’ progress, THL estimates that they spared 500,000 hens from cages last year.
THL published its annual Cage-free Fulfillment Report, which found that as of July 2025, 92% of all cage-free commitments due in 2024 or earlier have been fulfilled. This is up from 89% in 2024 and continues the trend of companies fulfilling their commitments at high rates.
THL also published a European Chicken Commitment Progress Report, which found that more than 260 million chickens raised for meat are already being spared from some of the worst and most widespread abuses on factory farms, and nearly 400 corporate commitments will spare 1.3 billion chickens once fully implemented.

I was curious to know how GiveWell assessed the decrease in human welfare due to decreasing human population. They simply neglected this consideration, as illustrated below, while implying accounting for it would make family planning interventions harmful.
- How should we think about lives that don't occur due to contraception? We assign no value to potential lives that don’t occur due to contraception. This is an important choice. Even putting a small positive weight on these potential lives (e.g., ~20% of the value of an existing life) could make family planning programs a net negative. [So I assume putting 100 % weight on potential lives, as implied by impartiality, would make family planning interventions harmful.] After consulting experts and stakeholders, we chose to assign no value because we think it aligns more with the views of program participants, staff, donors, and local decision-makers. We’re highly uncertain about this choice and don't think we have the objective "right" answer to these complex questions. (more)
