Hiring Right: Webinar Recap and What's Coming August 11th
By Deena Englander @ 2026-07-16T21:25 (+5)
On July 14th, Kristyn Berger of Berger HR Solutions joined us to walk through what nonprofit leaders need to have in place across the full employee life cycle, from attracting the right people to offboarding them well.
In this session, Kristyn and Deena cover:
- Attracting the right people: leading with your mission, building a solid job description before recruiting, writing honest postings that repel the wrong candidates, and posting where nonprofit talent looks
- Interviewing well: running a streamlined and consistent process, using phone screens to check fit and availability, structured panel interviews, and knowing when to conduct references and background checks
- Onboarding for success: preparing for day one, completing I-9s and tax forms for compliance, providing the employee handbook, and setting clear 30, 60, and 90-day expectations
- Developing your team: real-time coaching over annual reviews, low-cost development options like mentorship and stretch projects, and building a career path even when it points outside your organization
- Retaining strong staff: paying fairly and transparently, recognizing good work consistently, running stay interviews before people resign, and guarding against burnout in mission-driven teams
- Offboarding well: documenting performance issues in advance, applying discipline consistently across the team, calculating final pay according to state law, and building a transition plan that captures institutional knowledge
The session closes with a live Q&A covering stay interview cadence, resources for smaller nonprofits without HR staff, background check timing, intern classification, work trials, W-2 versus 1099 classification, and the mistakes that carry the biggest legal and financial risk.
A huge thank you to Berger HR Solutions for sponsoring this session and making it free for the nonprofit community.
Every attendee walked away with a ready-to-use checklist to bring back to their team and start working through immediately.
