Our Philosophy of Operations Education

Education matters. Knowledge (or lack thereof) is often the barrier between putting in effort and being successful. That’s why we’ve developed some educational programs to help our nonprofit leaders lead strong, healthy, and successful organizations.

Actually, my whole career started off with educating… and I think there’s a part of me that will never stop teaching. I measure a lot of my success by how well I’ve trained others to do a good job managing their orgs, for the best measure of a good teacher is how well their students apply their knowledge in practice.

In organizational management, there are different types of education. The ones I personally think are the most successful are the ones that give you clear action items and guidelines to implement, and that expose you to topic-specific nuances you might not have thought of on your own. No one person can be an expert in everything, and that’s why we aim to educate, as well as partnering with experts to supplement our individual knowledge and skills.

The general philosophies that we’ve based WorkStream’s educational program on include the following core concepts:

Our 2025 Plan For Educational Programming

Based on this philosophy, we’re excited to announce our 2025 education programming:

B) Operations Accelerator for Nonprofits

Program Summary: Now in its fourth iteration, the operations accelerator will bring together 6 organizations in a 6-month learning journey to quickly upskill their operations infrastructure and leadership skills.

Through this program, up to 2 members from each organization will work on creating and implementing an operational blueprint for their organization. I’m a strong believer that the best way to learn is through action - so as part of this program, we’ll translate knowledge into implementable assignments that will benefit both the organization and the participants. It’s the most effective way to quickly upskill both impactful organizations and operational talent. We believe that operational excellence creates mission excellence - and this is a relatively efficient way of scaling your impact.

Ideal Participants: This program is best suited for organizations with 4-20 staff members who have experienced recent growth, expect to scale quickly, or who haven’t yet developed a strong operational infrastructure. At least one participant should be in a leadership role with the ability to implement systemic change.

Program Structure: I’m a big believer in the power of community; that’s why this program is cohort-based, so that participants have a strong community supporting each other through this process The monthly structure includes:

Past participants have found it very helpful in learning how to structure and run their organizations optimally. Quick actions Some quick actions you can take if you think you might be interested in this:

Cost and Value: This program costs $2,800 per participating organization.  The way I usually quantify expected impact is: Organization budget x expected % increase in output = estimated earned value. For example, if your organization has a modest 10% increase in impact (our participants usually experience higher rates), and your org budget is $1 million, then the impact value of investing in this training equates to $100,000.

To Wrap It Up: Operating along the “One Thing” philosophy - focusing on the one thing you can do that makes everything else easier - investing in your operational structure should be a top priority! I look forward to working with you along the journey towards operational and organizational excellence!
